One doctor risked everything to make the NFL admit an unbelievable truth
In history there have been plenty of stories that are hard to believe but they really happened. Some of these stories have been made into films like The Theory of Everything which tells the story of Stephen Hawking, Jobs which is about the life of Steve Jobs the founder of Apple, Bridge of Spies which took place in the Cold War and Straight Outta Compton that was a film that was all about the rap group NWA. Many of these films are good but they deal with something that began years and sometimes decades ago. Concussion is a movie that tells an amazing story and is not as old as you may think.
The film is set in 2005 in Pennsylvania where Dr. Bennett Omalu (Will Smith) works as a pathologist in a small lab. One day he has an odd case come in, a football player has died and he requires an autopsy to discover the cause of death. Dr. Omalu is told to keep it simple but he decides to dig deeper and see what really could have caused this man to die in such an odd fashion. When he finishes his task he makes an astonishing discovery. He finds out this man died because of severe head trauma that occurred over time playing football that drove him to end his life. It turns out this man is not the only case of this happening and as the film progresses he is not the only one to suffer with a condition he names CTE (chronic traumatic encephalopathy). He has his find published in a medical journal but once this happens the NFL quickly does all they can to disparage his findings and deny that there is any problem at all. Thus the battle begins with this simple doctor having to take huge risks to protect the people who love to play the game and the corporation that wants nothing more than to make him give up. Why are they so afraid of his findings? Will Dr. Omalu be able to get them to admit the truth? And how far are they willing to go to stop him?
This was a pretty good movie. Will Smith gives one of his best performances in a good while. The film is clever and once the discovery of the new ailment is made the movie really gets going. It is a story that people should hear and anyone who has ever played football will want to watch. The score is wonderful and does a great job of helping the movie move along and get out every emotion and adds an extra spice in some key moments that make them very memorable. The cast is wonderful and no one plays a role too small with some characters that you will be rooting for from the beginning and others you will wish things would go in a different direction although it is clear this is not the way things were meant to go. By the final moments most people will be glad how it ends and will definitely not see the finale coming.
This movie gets 8/10. It is a good drama that tells this story in a way that is relate able and realistic. The story is a very interesting one and it is time for people to hear it. The right choices were made for the cast and this really helps make this a movie that is worth watching. It won’t be something everyone will enjoy but has enough to keep the majority of viewers entertained.
If you are football fan you should check this movie out. If you enjoy a good drama this is the movie to pick. If you are a fan of Will Smith you won’t want to miss his performance in this picture. Concussion comes out today.
