On the Good Men Project Social Issues Group on #Disposibility of Men, lead by Michael Kasdan, we discussed what happens when your student-athlete has a concussion. Too little is known about recovery and return to normal activity.
What we do know is that not enough time is given to the affected athlete to reintegrate into school and the sport.
From the Center for Disease Control, “Most … recover well from symptoms experienced at the time of the injury… for some, symptoms can last for days, weeks, or longer. In general, recovery may be slower among older adults, young children, and teens. Those who have had a concussion in the past are also at risk of having another one. Some people may also find that it takes longer to recover if they have another concussion.”
NOTE: Center for Disease Control site has response directives for both parents and the athlete. Brain Injury is nothing to be dismissed and must be treated – with the attention you’d give any other serious injury.
Concussions are identified as Mild Brain Trauma Injury (MTBI) but the is nothing mild about it.
From the Mayo Clinic, the symptoms are: Headache: can be persistent or severe; Whole body: blackout, fatigue, or poor balance; Cognitive: amnesia, disorientation, or mental confusion; Sleep: sleep disturbances or sleepiness; Gastrointestinal: nausea or vomiting; Also common: irritability, mild depression, ringing in the ears, or sensitivity to light.

We want to hear your point of view: What has been your experience with a concussion? How did you get it? What happened?
- Have you had the situation where your student-athlete had a concussion? Did he or she keep symptoms from you? When did you know you had to step in and take action?
- What has been the impact of concussion on your family? From what you’ve learned what would you advise others?
- Concussions are identified as Mild Traumatic Brain Injury (MTBI) but the is nothing mild about it.
